The Highfield Leadership Academy community is celebrating after its pupils overcame the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic to complete their GCSEs.

Sitting exams for the first time since 2019, pupils have valiantly overcome two years of disruption to their education, following periods of lockdowns, self-isolation and illness.

Staff and parents have today been celebrating with pupils at the school as they progress onto the next stage of their education or training. There was extra cause for celebration for two high achieving pupils who have been awarded prestigious sixth form scholarships.

Head Girl Amelia Hopwood has been offered a sought-after scholarship at Rossall School after displaying an inspiring commitment to their education and their peers, achieving four grade 8s and four grade 7s amongst their results.

Amelia has continued to go the extra mile for others during her time at Highfield, immersing herself in pupil leadership opportunities. A member of the school council, a founder member of the school’s anti-bullying team, Amelia has served as an Anne Frank Trust ambassador and has delivered workshops to over 500 pupils.

Amelia said:

“I know everyone at the school has worked so hard, not just in our exams but helping the community out as well. I’ve loved being at Highfield and I’m really pleased I could open my results with everyone today.”

Also receiving a scholarship at Rossall School is Coby Watson, who received outstanding results which included one grade 9, along with four grade 8s and two grade 7s.

Head Boy Jake Robinson has rounded off his time at Highfield – during which time he has raised thousands of pounds for local charities and has been an active member of the school’s Highfield Helpers volunteering group – with one grade 9, two grade 8s and four grade 7s.

Amongst the school’s highest achieving pupils were Summer Skinner, who achieved three grade 9s and four 8s, while Lucie Alcock’s results included three grade 8s and five grade 7s. Mason Briggs also achieved three grade 8s and two grade 7s amongst his results. The school say he’s “an excellent example of how through perseverance and the support of his friends and teachers’ success is still possible in difficult times.”

Anand Patel, interim Principal at Highfield Leadership Academy, said: “Our pupils have risen to the challenges they have faced over the last few years, and have thrived in the difficult circumstances.

“They should all be extremely proud of their achievements, and many have told me how appreciative they have been of the support they have received from their teachers and families.

“I’m excited to see where their next chapter in life takes them, and I’d like to thank our pupils for their hard work, and for our staff for continuing to provide them with the very best education.”
